I've got my hands pretty full at the moment doing some Visual Merchandising for Obus & Melissa Shoes for the Design Festival. Just finished a meeting and have solidified the idea. The sketch below is a vague concept but I will leave it to your imagination - there will be photos of the real deal later. Some other ideas are below including a random illustration of the Hindu God Kali and a design for the MTV Winter 'Woolman'. Still trying to figure out a way that I can make money doing Avant-Garde Couture so let me know if anyone has any bright ideas.

On speaking with one of my housemates on my current ideas and inspirations - I had my eyes opened to some new material. Lucas Grogani is an artist she had once met at a framers whose work had fascinated her - and so too it fascinates me.

Naturally I find myself attracted to work that challenges the viewer and above all causes us to evaluate where we stand. Grogani is creating work that touches heavily on the taboo, he pictures the 'seedy underbelly' of the 'fragile indigenous population' as well as 'tampering' with methods used in indigenous artwork.

Personally I think that no lines have been crossed in the matter. Grogani has paid an accurate homage to the indigenous techniques and portrayed a reality. If art is to express ourselves and our time than this work has succeeded.

I discovered Lauren Moffatt on the racks of yet another Melbourne boutique. This label is from New York and has a strong 'vintage-chic' feel about it, I can easily see a whole lot of 60's references mixed with some small 50's and Art Deco accessories. She also is strong in her use of colour, which of course attracted me in the first place didn't it?

Recently I purchased an Art Deco dressing table online for pretty cheap. On delivery I noticed the wood had been warn in some places and on cleaning it with spray and wipe I managed to stain the whole thing!

Luckily I sought some advice from a local French Polisher and bought myself a tub of dark Beeswax. Was a lot of elbow-grease getting it done and I had to re-touch a lot of spots due to a bicycle falling on it, but finally it is ready to go!

I was exploring the boutique stores of melbourne when I found a very impressive little nook filled with beautiful colourful things! Unfortunately I will have to get back to you on the name of it, however inside I discovered so many amazing labels.

Sretsis was one of them and I had a great time sorting through their A/W 2010 collection based on the Lladro collectable figurines. I really do love the way they shoot their look-books, some very clever editing. And of course the clothing, which is massively feminine with a bit of quirk and a strong colour palette.

Just need to save up my money so I can sport some...

String Garden Tutorial

Came across the idea of string gardens whilst looking through the craftster forum for home decorating ideas for my new place. So inspired by this concept I was that I had to go out and try it the next day. Here is my first try and hopefully the plant will be able to grow in the conditions. Planning on planting some herbs and cascading ferns soon!

Materials:
Plant
Choose one appropriate for indoor/outdoor. This project has been done with all kinds of different plants, so try out your own experiment.
Soil
Pick a soil that suits your plant, I used a regular potting mix and anything with clay in it will also help hold the soil together (dig it up from your backyard).
String
I used a cotton string but it stains very easily, if you want a clean look pick something with plastic in it.

Method:
Step 1:
Pull your plant out of it's plastic pot and pull out as much of the soil as possible from the roots.
Step 2.
Put your new soil in a container and add water until it is damp and easily compacted. Press and mould this soil around the roots and base of your plant to form a ball.
Step 3.
If you have moss, dampen and wrap around the ball. If not just go ahead and wrap the ball up in string until it is firm enough to hang. You can be creative and suspend the plant all kinds of ways so that it sits upward, downward or on an angle.
Step 4.
Done! I hammered a nail above my window and tied it there, but you can hang it anywhere. Should you need to water it use a spray bottle and only water at the base of the plant, make sure it needs it first by testing to see how dry the soil is.

Watering: Use a spray bottle to water and only water on the plant itself or on the base of it's stems. Check to see if soil is dry first so as not to drown the plant. You can also untie the plant and sit it in a bowl of water for 5 minutes and it will soak it up from the base.

The abstract expressionist works unfolded to the tunes of Kabouters Forest, Obscotch and Seams.

Spent yesterday hangin' out at Oh Really Gallery while Marty helped curate the James Freiberg exhibition for the opening tonight. My apologies for the extended period of time between posts but...

I have finished! Last week was my marking day and the last two evenings was showcasing the Whitehouse Graduate Parade & Exhibition. I received so much wonderful feedback from the crowd and I would like to thank all of you gave me your applause. Check out the first coverage!

Today I have already answered a couple of phone calls from companies interested in having me. We shall see who snatches me up! So where to from now?

For starters I am in the midst of embracing my first day of freedom. Boy do I feel strange today, I have no idea what to do with myself. As for the future, I am about move like the wind, take it as it comes, but first... a holiday in Perth.

Here are my top picks from Japanese Fashion Week for S/S 20010

1. Discovered - was channeling some serious English Punk + School Boy this season with a lot of bleached jeans mixed with blazers, waistcoats, shorts and collared shirts with some awesome double plaid. You can never go wrong with double plaid.

2. Araisara - is doing the Pirate + Peasant thing with gathered loose pieces and waisted shorts and jackets with swashbuckle belts tied in with headwraps. The little trench dresses are very flattering.

3. Phenomenon - Looks like Plaid + Prep is stickin' around because Phenomenon are pulling it off and throwing in some nautical for good measure. I love the sheer shirts and the sheer shorts over pants, very cool and something Western men wouldn't touch with a ten foot pole. There is even a basket waistcoat in there, so clever.

4. Junya Tashiro - Pretty Hippy + Tailoring is the look going on here. Lots of babydoll and a-line waistlines and dip dyed lacey fabrics. The black, cream and canary yellow colour palette strikes me a something a little different too. Very cute kind of collection.

Hugo began his work with mostly self portraiture and has recently decided to tap into the fashion photography scene. The shoot we did together is sure to be the first of many as I believe hugo is an extremely talented friend who plans to make it to the top - as I myself also work towards. Acid Party Fabric Prints

I have become bored with the fabrics that stores have available these days and the only solution seems to be printing my own. Nothing has become more satisfying than working with other artists around me to produce beautiful original prints! My last collection I worked with Eduardo Wolfe and this time around I have called upon Antochrist Acidparty to bring her characteristics into my designs. I can honestly say that this collection could never look as good if not for having this fabric.

I would describe this work as 'spontaneous artwork' as my Nanna does describe hers. The work is never arranged, planned or predicted and 'evolves' naturally and expressively through the paint splatters. Anto then draws strange and intricate creatures over these patterns - triggered by the shapes and formed by the imagination. These are the prints I used for my collection below - coolest shit ever. I can't thank this chick enough!

The day started out with a crisis - I had a model pull out 10 minutes before we were meeting at the studio and began the frantic call around. Luckily when I arrived my stylist Anna Kunz and makeup and hair artist Emma Neilson were already doing the same and saved the day with Libby - who was a real natural. Thanks to Hugo we had a studio for the day as well as the assistance of the studio owner and a whole lot of champagne to get down without any lunch. Thankyou everyone for helping me bring this together - I can't wait to see the results!

Last night was amazing. I haven't let myself have much of a good time these days as I have been working very hard on my collection. The date began with filling up on Japanese sushi and dumpling combination meals and then together me and my beloved took a walk to the State Theatre. I would recommend those with a love of decadence and the deco/nouveau era to take a look inside this place.

Rufus made his dramatic entrance wearing a long cloak with a feathers around his neck which he wore while he played out the entire Songs for Lulu album. As I watched I found myself mesmerized by his hands running up and down the piano and his voice, particularly the song featured in the clip below brought tears to my eyes.

It was an extremely melancholy experience until he returned wearing his normal attire - tight orange pants and a scarf worn like a cravat. The second half launched quickly into far more uplifting (but not quite) tunes from his previous albums such as 'Grey Gardens', 'Cigarettes and Chocolate Milk', 'Going To A Town', 'The Art Teacher', 'Nobody's Off The Hook', 'Hallelujah' and a cover of a song written by his mother.

The new Rufus Wainwright album 'All Days Are Nights: Songs For Lulu' hit up my mailbox today and I am now on my second time round. The album found passion in the death of his mother and also mentions his also-talented sister Martha Wainwright. For certain this is the most beauteous and soulful album to reach my ears in a while and features only his mourning vocals woven into the technical talent for the grand piano. Although do not fear - there are a share of more ragtime-inspired pieces to wipe away the tears and tell you stories. This is an album to be inspired by! Soon I will be seeing him perform at the State Theatre - I can hardly contain myself.

Over the past few weekends I have had nothing but stylists and film directors creeping in and out of my house with armfuls of strange possessions. My handbag is gone - my flamingoes have left me - my tights have vanished.

One of these creative creepers is Anna Kunz who happened to steal away with a dress and a headpiece for a course running at the ACP (Australian Centre of Photography). The course ran for 6 weeks with Emmanuel Giraud from Tangent Magazine showing everyone the ropes in fashion photography.

Here are a couple of images that resulted from the shoot. These will be exhibited at the ACP sometime soon I hope - there are more images so I will keep your posted. For now - this 'Kirill' aint half bad for someone who just did a fashion photography course!

Officially met Simon Lovelace a couple of weeks back at an exhibition opening. Couple of wines down the throat and a handful of nuts and wa la - made a new friend! Together we made amazing conversation which eventuated in a chunk of decent photos for his most recent 'girl next door' photography book. The man lives an artists dream really - he runs Blank Space Gallery and lives and works above doing whatever he chooses to pursue for most of his days. I had a great time at his place sorting through his bag of second hand nineties lingerie and playing power woman in my hooker boots. Certainly some kind of alter-ego thing going on here. We make a super photo team!

Got called up last minute on monday to put together a salad bikini for a Sumo Salad promotion in the 22/09/2010 issue of MX. I ran around all afternoon trying to find a goddamn plain triangle green bikini! Seems like they aren't stocked and green is not in. Would have liked to get more extreme and creative with it but the brief was to keep it simple. Did have cherry tomatoes on the nipples - but it looked too much like nipples. Did have purple lettuce on the bottom - but it looked too much like pubes. I think I unconsciously hone in on the rude bits when I make costume - gotta snap out of it!

Considering I will be running as a freelance creative I will not have and nor want the ability to 'brand' myself. I guess when it comes down to it - my advertising strategy is quite simple: go places and meet people while wearing something from another planet. I am like a peacock or a duck - or any member of the male species of animal except for human. Because we are the only species that has female showoffs.

Very happy with the illustration, although I did make a little boo when I got blue on her hand, so I just put some more on the other hand. See how she is worried because the colour rubbed off on her black and white body? Somehow it just got super meaningful!

Sketching Saturday

Haven't picked up a pencil in a while - unless I am designing. Had a wonderful sunny day getting stuck into making some artwork. It is to be submitted into a 'Spring Lamb' design competition, and even though they want 'beautiful fashion drawings' and an 'outrageous and fashion forward' design I am doing them a biologically correct illustration of the tamest design I can possibly think of (because I am sure their idea of 'outrage' does not fall in line with mine. And by 'they' I mean that bastard, Henry Roth.

NOTE: Sorry to taint my good-looking post but I am just gonna throw him in here so we can all have a little vent session in my comments box. Come one and all - feed my blog with your hate!

Although I am currently finishing my bachelor in fashion design, I do not wish to pin myself down to that label. The Hoopy Time Show

Most recently Shayli participated as part of the promotional photoshoot for the new television pilot 'The Hoopy Time Show'. Shayli dressed in the role of the Court Jester of Hoopy Kingdom and was photographed by Nick Coppins. Being Born Again Couture

Shayli Harrison designed headpieces for the launch of Being Born Again Couture in April 2010. This event highlighted the couture collaborations between 10 well-known designers and 10 renowned artists based in Sydney. Shayli displayed her specially made headpieces on each of the couture garments at the Cell Block Theatre at the National Arts School on launch night.

700 Photos

Shayli Harrison was chosen as one of one of the seven designers and artists involved in the 700 Photos exhibition at the Darlo Bar early 2010. The event required artists/designers to set up their ‘dream photoshoot’ in one of the seven hotel rooms. The public were then encouraged to bring their cameras and invited in to snap up the moment.

‘In The Mornings’ Collection 2010

‘In The Mornings’ is a three-body collection designed by Shayli Harrison for her first semester project at Whitehouse for 2010. The concept behind the clothing seeks to dispel the many common themes associated with nudity: savagery, rudeness, danger and criminality. The collection asks us to question exactly what clothing has become – beyond necessity. The feature piece of this collection is a blazingly bright coloured dress made in collaboration with local artist Eduardo Wolfe-Alegria.

Bad Moon Rising by Sarah Contos turned out to be a lovely little body of work touching on some kinky themes. Most of the work was record covers crafted over with beads and sequins to make the musicians look like gimps. Other textile works included tacky fabric teardrops and a pair of pyramid shaped boobs with beaded tassels on a frame. One of my favourites is the pleather dream-catcher I snapped below, it looks like a big sexy spider web.

Bad Moon Rising is a new body of work that embraces painting, assemblage, craft, soft sculpture and installation, which investigates themes of disillusionment and unfulfilled desire relating to romance, status and wealth. Adopting a ‘mono-no-aware’ approach, the exhibition centers around the sadness of things through the use of contrasting textures and disparate artifacts. When placed alongside one another these elements offer fresh hope and empathetic dialogues. Infused with voodoo sensibilities and fetishism ideologies and employing an intimate, personal and emotional framework, this exhibition looks at the relationships between these themes through materials, objects and textures whilst maintaining an erotic tongue in cheek charge.

Certainly an opening I urge anyone to go to. If you live in the city you would have already seen similar artwork gracing the walls and the stores of Newtown.

I have really enjoyed watching this artist grow more and more colourful/dynamic and realist infused over time. This is a friend who is always building up on new layers and new strength of meaning. Come check it out - maybe even grab some 'Ears' of your own.

First Calavera

My current collection takes inspiration from the anatomy of insects as well as the celebrations in Mexico for the Day of the Dead. Working from this book I have begun creating my portfolio - my very first Calavera (skeleton) on a Nicho (miniature shrine). I had great fun making this little guy and am still working into the decorating his surrounds. I will post up a picture when the finished product is ready.

'Bou' New Collection Launch

The new collection of 'Bou' by Christina Bouzios was shown last Saturday night at Eclipsefest at Hermann Bar. As one of her many lovers and supporters I was proud to see such a beautiful collection - especially one so rich in colour.

The stream of models walked out in deep purples and plums mixed with tropical orange and yellows. The style of the collection was performing the token gypsy-esque style that 'bou' and the lady herself naturally wears - as well as mixing it up with a fruit salad super-tropical cha-cha.

Judging on the way the designer threw herself on the ground and bowed to her models - she was pretty happy with her work and the help from her models too! There is a lot of love in this collection and I keenly await the look-book to come - Bou
